&8216;Taste&8217; of the U.S.
Fourth-graders from Hawthorne Elementary have been studying the United States all year. To sum up everything they have learned, they will each pick a state and research it. On June 6, they will invite the Hawthorne third-graders to experience a state tea. Each student shares what he or she learned about the state. Some of the topics include landforms, natural resources and tourist attractions. They also prepare recipes using foods that are native to their states.
Good citizens in the classroom
Every month at Halverson School, each classroom teacher chooses a student they consider the Good Citizen of the Month. The teacher then writes up a paragraph explaining why that student was chosen. The student is given a certificate and their picture and write-up is placed on the bulletin board by the front door.
Applebee’s Restaurant has also been catering a free meal for the students that are chosen each month. Good Citizens for April were: Adison Malakowsky, Timothy Trumphour, Perla Valencia, Rheanna Beighley, Lexie Simon, Alyssa Matson, Kyonna Smith, Andrea Vazquez, Madison Newton, Sara Vanek, Monica Marcial, Chris Enderson, Nicole Borneman, Eli Ojeda, Larry Holcomb, Kenny Schultz, Lani Hanson, Katie Williamson and Makael Lunning.

NHS members participate in spring clean-up at Thorne Crest
Approximately 30 students from Albert Lea High School’s National Honor Society chapter participated in a spring clean-up project at Thorne Crest Retirement Community. The students spent the afternoon on May 18 cleaning up the yard at Thorne Crest and doing landscaping projects. To become a member of NHS, a student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.7, complete an application including recommendations from five faculty/staff members and participate in at least five hours of community service. The students who helped during the spring clean-up were already NHS members and chose to help the community by planning and participating in this project. They even spent a little time singing for the residents of Thorne Crest.

Also, several students, Winter Nihiser, Curtis Wilson, Dixie Applegate, Amber Flategraff and Trevor Berg, won prizes for having winning Earth Day posters.
