A higher-than-usual number of airplanes &8212; perhaps about 20 &8212; came through Albert Lea on Monday night. Airplanes from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada visisted Albert Lea. They departed at noon today.
Albert Lea Municipal Airport Manager Jim Hanson said the group calls itself the 70 Knot Club &8212; a name that refers to its cruising speed. He said 70 knots is about 80 mph.
&8220;Most of the planes are simple 2- and 4-place flivvers from the 40s and 50s, but some of the members have upgraded to newer airplanes. They select destinations about 150 to 200 miles apart, looking for airports that have grass areas for landing &8212; harking back to the airfields of the era,&8221; Hanson wrote in an e-mail message.
On Sunday night the group was in Prairie Du Chien, Wis. The 70 Knot Club left Albert Lea for Monticello, Iowa. It then will fly to Mexico, Mo.
