Carol J. Skaggs (Hughes), 70 of Lorain, Ohio, formerly of Amherst, Ohio, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at home following a long illness.
She was born Dec. 19, 1936, in Summersville, W.Va.
She lived in Amherst from 1959 until she moved to Lorain in 2005.
Skaggs was employed from 1981 to 1998 as a toll collector for the Ohio Turnpike Commission. During the 1960s and 1970s she had worked as a waitress at Tiffany&8217;s in Lorain and at the former Lorain Country Club.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Post 118 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Amherst, and was affiliated with Sheffield Church of God.
Survivors include her sons Richard L. Skaggs of Sullivan and Claude &8220;Joe&8221; Skaggs of Amherst; daughters Brenda S. Swiger of Lorain and Jean A. Martz of Elyria; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph A. Hughes in 1963 and Ada B. Foster Hughes in 1972); brothers Joseph Hughes Jr. and Harold Hughes; sister, Vivian Bowers; and her former husband, Kenneth L. Skaggs, in 1993.
Friends may call Tuesday, 5 to 9 p.m., at Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Ave., where services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. Pastor Mark Leonhardt of Sheffield Church of God will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
