A local soccer squad will battle for a district title Wednesday.

The Elks&8217; U-15 boys&8217; soccer team travels to Prior Lake this week to determine the south district&8217;s champion. The winner earns a berth in the Minnesota&8217;s Youth Soccer Association&8217;s state tournament in Blaine. The boys, entering 10th grade, carry a 5-1 league record and a 10-3 mark overall.

The defense is led by goalie Casey Marka and supported by defenders Aaron Thomas, Luke Thompson, Corey Doyle, Luis Chavez and Dan Edwards. It&8217;s a stingy bunch who has found success through great communication and fundamental tackling skills. They are also adept at starting the offensive attack.

Midfielders have set the style of play for the team. The U-15 boys apply an indirect style of play that emphasizes short, accurate passing and ball possession. Cody Malepsy, Harry Gjersvik, Jack Sturtz and Sam Matheson carry the load as outside midfielders covering the 120 yard-field from corner to corner. Nate Harris and Lars Gjersvik work in the middle.

The front of the team is comprised of Oscar Hernandez at right forward with Seth Light and Any Kjos sharing duties at left forward. Hernandez leads the team in goals and keeps a constant scoring threat in front of the opponent&8217;s net while typically drawing a doubleteam.

Terry Gjersvik and Chuck Kjos coach the team. They thank the Albert Lea Elks Club and team members&8217; parents.
