Albert Lea High School varsity bowlers consisting of Tom Tiegs, Tyler Espe, Nick DeRaad, Rob Westendorf, Derreck Walk and Andy Harte participated in the Southern Minnesota High School bowling tournament on Sept. 8 in Owatonna. The team is coached by Carilee Squires-Harte and Dave Squires.

There were fourteen teams from southern Minnesota and the south metro area competing in a Baker-system tournament.

The first eight games were compiled to set up four match games and then the top eight out of the 14 teams went on to compete for the title. Each match consisted of two games using the total pins for the match to determine the winner.

In the first match, Albert Lea played a very good Rochester John Marshall team and lost by 12 pins. Rochester went on to win the tournament by defeating Eden Prairie in the championship match.

Albert Lea then faced the top qualifying team from Owatonna and defeated them by 1 pin. Mankato West was the next opponent and A.L. won the match by 45 pins to secure the consolation championship.

The Minnesota South Central High School Bowling League play continues at Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea Saturday.

The varsity and junior varsity teams would like to extend an invitation to stop out to learn and enjoy how a Baker System Match is played. If you do not understand the format, ask one of the team members.
