MAPLETON &8212; The United South Central football team led Maple River 8-7 until late in the third quarter, however a 13-point fourth gave the Eagles a 27-8 win.
USC struck first when Riley Stenzel scored from two yards out and quarterback Alex Pederson ran in the two-point conversion to put the Rebels up 8-0.
Maple River would answer back with a 3-yard run into the end zone by Ethan Anderson to pull within one.
The Rebels&8217; defense shutout the Eagles in the second quarter and came up with a big stand in the third quarter after USC lost a fumble. Maple River drove the ball down to the one-foot line before the Rebels held.
The Eagles would eventually get their touchdown late in the third quarter to go up 14-8.
A USC interception set up one Eagle TD in the fourth and they added some distance with their final score.
&8220;We played very well for four quarters and then the wheels kind of came off,&8221; USC head coach Brent Schimek said.
USC used a balanced rushing attack to pound out 138 yards on the ground, but the passing game never clicked going 1 of 8 for just 10 yards.
&8220;We were leading in total yards until that fourth quarter,&8221; Schimek said.
The Rebels are now 1-4 on the season and will welcome Minnesota Valley Lutheran to Wells Friday.
