They did it again

Last year the Albert Lea girls&8217; swim team proved it could do it. This season the Tigers showed it was no fluke.

For the second time in as many seasons Albert Lea downed Austin in a Big Nine Conference dual 97-87. The two wins are the only two for the Tigers over the Packers in school history.

The tone was set early as the 200 medley relay team of Amanda Walters, Gracie Thomas, Samantha Cole and Amy Horejsi dominated the event posting a time of 1:57.89. That time is just hundredths of a second off the state cut time and bettered the Packers&8217; runner-up team by nearly four seconds.

Alaina Schulz built on the Tigers&8217; lead by winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:10.35, while Amanda Walters just beat Jackie Elwood to the wall as they finished 1-2 in the 50 free. Walters swam a 26.14 and Elwood was clocked at 26.23.

Elwood would get a win in the 100 free followed by Schulz in second and Cole easily won the 100 butterfly with a mark of 1:07.10.

Those victories helped the Tigers stretch their advantage out to 10 points in the team race after Austin had closed to within two twice.

Mallory Carstens finished second in the 500 free while Walters and Thomas posed wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

The Tigers also posted a win in the 200 freestyle relay thanks to a time of 1:44.15 put up by Cole, Elwood, Schulz and Walters.

Junior varsity winners for the Tigers were Ali Schmitz in the 200 IM, Makayla Walters in the 100 butterfly, Jasmine Hanson in the 500 free and the 200 free relay and the 200 medley relay teams.

The Tigers are in Lakeville Saturday.
