ALDEN &8212; One week after disposing of Nicollet 42-16 in the season finale the Alden-Conger football team did it again. This time the win came in the quarterfinals of the nine-man section 36-14.
A-C was impressive despite limiting playing time for key players who were nursing some injuries.
With E.J. Knight playing only on defense, Matt Bremseth filled in at halfback and had a big night. He scored the team&8217;s first touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter.
A-C would go up 16-8 in the first when Mitchell Kleinschrodt found Nick Wach for a 3-yard TD.
Bremseth had the team&8217;s lone score in the second quarter when he rumbled in from 9 yards out.
Nicollet scored on 2-yard run making the score 22-14 at halftime.
Both of Nicollet&8217;s touchdowns were set up by big A-C penalties as the Knights were unable to blow the game open despite holding their opponent to just three yards in the first quarter.
A-C&8217;s defense would pitch a shutout in the second half and the offense used some punishing running to pull away after the break.
&8220;We just started playing some ball, started hitting some people,&8221; A-C head coach Chad Mattson said.
Bremseth had a 4-yard TD run in the third quarter for his third touchdown of the game and Alan Hendrickson completed the scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth.
Bremseth finished the game with 154 yards rushing
while the Knights had 229 yards on the ground.
Kleinschrodt completed nine passes for 143 yards and the score while playing just the first half.
The victory sets up a rematch of a week two game for the Knights against Cleveland this Saturday. Cleveland won the first meeting 22-16.
&8220;The kids have wanted this game since week two,&8221; Mattson said. &8220;If we can cut out the mistakes we have a good shot.&8221;
