Spencer K. Osterberg Sr., 89, formerly of Minneapolis, died Saturday evening, Oct. 20, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center of Albert Lea, where he had been a resident for the last seven years.
The memorial service for Spencer will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis on Friday at 1 p.m.
Spencer was born on April 3, 1918, the son of Oscar and Ellen Osterberg. On July 31, 1942, he married Betty Kieselhorst before going off to Europe during World War II. He was a pilot of a B-17 Bomber in the 91st Bomber Group out of England and was shot down and wounded on a mission in 1944 and spent the rest of the war in a Prisoner of War camp. When he returned to the United States, he attended the University of Minnesota and settled down in Minneapolis for most of his adult life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and the good company of friends and family. As age and infirmity took their toll, he took up residence at the Good Samaritan Center of Albert Lea for the last several years.
Spencer was preceded in death by both his parents, his sisters Adeline McGray, Evelyn Brokl, Lola Richie, and his younger brother, Oliver, and his much loved wife of many years, Betty.
He is survived by his younger sister Gladys and her husband Robert Anderson of Edina; his daughter Laurel Osterberg of Minneapolis; his son Spencer Osterberg Jr. and his wife Ardie of Albert Lea; his grandchildren Mel Cross, Suzanne Cross, and Eric and Yong Osterberg of Lawrenceville Ga., and Amy and Randy Shamp of Owatonna; and great-grandchild, Jayden Shamp.
