ROCHESTER &8212; For the third consecutive season the Albert Lea girls&8217; soccer team has eclipsed the 10 win mark when it beat a talented John Marshall team 2-1 and pushed its record to an impressive 10-4-1.
&8220;Winning isn&8217;t everything, but this was really a big win for us against a very good team,&8221; said Tigers head coach Rick Barnhill. &8220;It&8217;s great to see that kind of competition between two very good programs, they (John Marshall) are a real class act.&8221;
&8220;We have started playing with some real freedom and the girls are having fun but they are also anxious for the sections to get started.&8221;
The Tigers pushed the score to 2-0 on the Rockets, both goals courtesy of attacker Abby Arends, before giving up the Rockets lone goal with just 4:20 remaining in the match.
Connor Peterson and Jenna Christensen assisted Arends on her goals but a lot of the credit, according to coach Barnhill, goes to Morgan Stadheim, Sophie Miller, and Christensen for their outstanding all around play.
Stephanie Ferguson took a turn between the pipes for the Tigers and had 24 JM shots on goal come her way while allowing just one goal. JM outshot the Tigers 24-12.
Albert Lea will be back in action Saturday when they host the Winhawks of Winona. The game time has been changed from 2 p.m. to noon.
