Funeral services for Bernard James Godeke, 80, of Hollandale will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hollandale Reformed Church, Hollandale. The Rev. Ron Sikkema will officiate. Interment will be at the Hollandale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bernie died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007, at his home.
Bernard (Bernie) James Godeke was born on March 13, 1927, to Albert and Grada (Borghuis) Godeke in Mille Lacs County. Bernie lived in Pease for 17 years and attended the District 26 schools. He moved to Hollandale in February of 1944. Bernie was united in marriage to Alice Mondeel on June 4, 1948, at the Hollandale Reformed Church. He was employed at Veldman Equipment in the service department and Ag Power Enterprises as service manager from 1954 to 1994. Bernie joined the Hollandale Reformed Church in 1947 where he served several terms as elder and deacon and taught Sunday school and Catechism classes. He was a Hollandale cadet counselor for a number of years. He was a member of and served as chairman of the board at the Hollandale Christian School. Bernie served on the Hollandale City Council for four terms as well. He enjoyed gardening, birding, metal and woodworking, and volunteer work at the Hollandale Christian School.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; children, Carol (Clay) Winterboer of Carroll, Iowa, Don (Anna) Godeke of Hollandale, Elaine (Galen) Spain of Otisco, Lyle (Joan) Godeke of Hollandale, Gail (Larry) Martell of Stillwater; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Nienoord of Albert Lea, and Frieda DeJong of Artesia, Calif.; brother, Bill (Lois) Godeke of Albert Lea; many nieces and nephews.
Bernard was preceded in death by parents; grandson, Tim; three brothers and three sisters.
