Funeral services for Marie Juliett Peterson, 97, of New Richland, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Richland. The Rev. Paul Andree will officiate. Interment will be at St. Peter&8217;s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marie died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at New Richland Care Center.

Marie Juliett Peterson was born on Sept. 18, 1910, to Andrew and Carrie (Nelson) Madison in LaSalle, Ill. She grew up in the Matawan area and graduated from New Richland High School in 1928. Marie married Harvey D. Peterson on March 14, 1936, in New Richland. The couple farmed in the New Richland area until moving to Portland, Ore. In the 1960s they owned and operated the States Motel in Portland, Ore. Later they returned to Minnesota and Marie worked for a while at the JC Penney store. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland, the Naeve Hospital Auxilary and the Broadway Unit in New Richland. Marie was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing, music and dancing.

Survivors include her daughters, Janet Newell of Portland, Ore. and Judy (Vernon) Laite Jr. of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Jeff Newell, Jim (Rachael) Newell, Jon Newell, Jodie (Kevin) Pranke and Jackie (Kevin) Weigel; great-grandchildren, Aaron, Alissa, and Adam Newell, Jessica Newell, Isaac Newell, Wes, Braydon, and Ashley Bodkin, Paige and Robbie Weigel, Jamie Laite and Jackson and Justin Purdie; great-great-grandchild, Steven Laite; and sister, Marjorie Schwenke.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harvey D. Peterson; a son in infancy; and brother James Madison.
