MANKATO &8212; For the second time this year the Albert Lea boys&8217; hockey team played Mankato West to a 3-2 final. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the latest one played Thursday night was not in their favor as A.L. fell in overtime after a questionable penalty gave the Scarlets a 5-on-4 power play.
The loss snapped the Tigers&8217; 10-game winning streak and marks just the fourth time in 11 games they have given up more than one goal against.
Casey Woodside scored both of A.L.&8217;s goals in the first period as the Tigers led 2-1 after one. The Scarlets&8217; Cory Leiverman did all of West&8217;s scoring of the night as he lit the lamp once in the first and once in the second for a 2-2 game after three periods.
The Tigers had to fight off several penalties throughout the game including a 10 minute major in the second period. However, the Tigers did have a power play opportunity late in the third but was unable to convert.
Then in overtime it was Leiverman again, this time for the hat trick and the win as West gets revenge for the Tigers&8217; 3-2 win in Albert Lea earlier in the year.
With the loss, the Tigers are now 18-4 on the year and are still in the hunt for the Big Nine title with three games remaining. A.L. will be on the road Tuesday when it travels to Rochester to take on Mayo who stands at 7-4 in the conference.
