During March, employees of the Freeborn County Government Center and the Department of Human Services combined their efforts to collect food and cash donations to benefit the food shelves located in Freeborn County.
All food items and donations were gifted to the: Albert Lea Salvation Army, the Ecumenical Food Pantry at First Presbyterian Church and the Alden Area Food Shelf.
The team of the Department of Human Services and the Freeborn County Highway Department collected a total of 554.5 pounds of food and $1,050 (with each $1 equaling one pound of food) in donations for a total of 1,604.5 pounds.
Coming in a close behind were Freeborn County Government Center employees who, with the help of the court administration offices, public health staff and the Shellrock Watershed, collected a total of 1,255 pounds (824 pounds in food and $431 in donations).
The challenge was held during the month of March, as part of the National Food Drive celebration. The employees of Freeborn County, along with some help from the Freeborn County commissioners, came up with a combined total of a 2,859.5 pounds – which is now their gift to the people of Freeborn County who can sometimes use a little extra help to feed their families.
Heading up the food drive challenge were Pam Watson, Tim Sosebee, Michelle Severtson, Dave Rasmussen, LaRae Cassens, Anita Majerus, Irene Anderson, John Kluever and Diane Penning.
