50 years ago – 1958
Ed Stalker, head baseball coach at Glenville High School, signed a one year contract to play baseball with the Albert Lea Packers of the Southern Minnesota League.
Named to the Border League All Conference Basketball Team were Paul Thistad and Bob Stencel from Alden, Neil Pierce from Freeborn, Gary Yost and Ken Davidson from Emmons and Ron Haukoos from Kiester.
Bill Standly,first year head golf coach at Albert Lea High School, opened practice with three returning letter winners, Fred Jones, Duane Harves and Clair Friday.
25 years ago – 1983
Placing third in the Minnesota State Broomball Tournament was Thom&8217;s Auto Parts of Albert Lea. Team members included Rick Mummert, Mick Hanson, John Biever, Larry Goodnature, Jim Thom, Greg Sorenson, John Skaar, Mark Weis, Jeff Lester and Dean Dahl.
Winners in the Albert Lea Family &8220;Y&8221; Racquetball Tournament were Jim Morris – &8220;C&8217; League, Glen Fuller – &8220;B&8221; League, Pete Callstrom – &8220;A&8221; League and Mary Vogel Women&8217;s &8220;B&8221; League.
Named to the Border League 1982 / 1983 All Conference Girls Basketball Team were Ranae Frisbie and Shari Erdahl from Bricelyn, Jackie Bias from Freeborn, Shelly Simonson from Kiester-Walters, Sherri Lauen from Emmons. Marilyn Olson from Alden-Conger and Sue Johnson from Lyle.
10 years ago – 1998
Awards presented at the annual Albert Lea High School basketball banquet included Most Improved – Kelly Boyer, Most Inspiritional – Heidi Hebert, Hustle Award and Coaches Award – Kristi Kleinbeck, Players Award – April Larson and Beth Kamrath.
Named to the All Big Nine Conference Hockey Team from Albert Lea were Chad Damerow, Mike Olsen, Grant Domke and Jay Austinson. Tigers receiving honorable mention were George Gonzalez, Josh Stieler, Troy Bibus, Mitch Brua and Dan Claybourne.
Jim Kelley rolled his second career 300 game, Kenn Breamer had an 806 series and Jim Coshun an 804 series at the Holiday Lanes in Albert Lea.
