The Albert Lea Farmers Market is open for the season! Markets have grown exponentially in the last decade, which is no surprise since a local market benefits a community in so many ways.
Going to the farmers market is a mix of culture and community. The North Broadway Avenue location, provided by the city, has proven to be a real asset to the market. The grassy area to the north, overlooking Fountain Lake, provides a wonderful spot for entertainment and special events. Last year, local residents were treated to music and entertainment during several of the Wednesday evening markets. There were also various clubs and organizations that raised funds by serving community members some great meals, and in turn, they received support for their local causes.
Of course there are the obvious health benefits to shopping at the farmers market. Our vendors are required to live within a 35-mile radius so you are assured that your food hasn&8217;t lost flavor or nutritional value during transportation. And, as people become more health conscious and concerned about the source of their food, we can get to know our local vendors and ask questions about their growing techniques.
There are environmental and financial paybacks as well.
Buying from local producers and businesses keeps dollars re-circulating throughout our region which is good for our economic health. Consuming locally grown food contributes to the very existence of the farmers market, and to the livelihood of the farmers.
Also this year, the market is going green by offering reusable shopping bags at a low cost, thereby reducing the number of plastic bags that end up in the landfill. Or you can just bring your own bag and you will fit right in with the eco-friendly spirit of the market.
Some benefits are not so obvious but equally important. The farmers market builds an old-fashioned sense of community &8212; it&8217;s a social activity that connects people of all ages. It has also provided a much-needed gathering place and has helped in our efforts to revitalize downtown. Come out and enjoy the market and reap all the health and social benefits.
See you at the farmers market &8212; another thing that makes Albert Lea a great place to live!
