G-E makes playoff exit

AUSTIN — The Glenville-Emmons baseball team (10-7) gave the Awesome Blossoms a much better game than it did earlier in the year when it lost 21-8 to Blooming Prairie (14-6) in just the third game of the season.

But numerous mistakes plagued the Wolverines all day when they fell 9-4 to BP in the Class A, Section 1A, West Division in Austin Saturday morning.

“We knew coming in that we almost had to play errorless ball,” said Wolverine head coach Louie Toulouse. “We didn’t do that, but we were much more competitive today and the kids showed up to play. We played well, we have noting to be disappointed about.”

The Wolverines fell behind just 1-0 after the bottom of the first but the inning was an ominous sign of what was in store for G-E throughout the contest. Wolverine starter Jon Mittag threw three wild pitches, including one that allowed the BP run, and hit a batter. In all G-E pitching hit seven batters, had seven wild pitches, the defense committed four errors and the Wolverines struckout 12 times.

Despite their less than flawless play the Wolverines rallied in the top of the second and took the lead with three runs on just one hit by Jake Kirsch.

Unfortunately for G-E they would not get another hit until the top of the sixth when senior Ethan Weiss singled and later scored on a Garret Schumaker sacrifice-fly to center field.

The Wolverines trailed 9-4 heading into the top of the seventh but pushed the Awesome Blossoms to the brink when they loaded the bases and had the tying run standing in the on-deck circle before being eliminated from the playoffs.

Besides Kirsch and Weiss, the only other Wolverine to collect a hit on the day was freshman Tyler Woodside who relieved Mittag in the fourth inning. Although G-E made an early exit from the section tournament this year its 10-7 mark is a drastic improvement over last years 4-15 record.

“You have to give Blooming Prairie credit, they took advantage of every mistake we made and that’s a sign of a good team,” Toulouse said. “We have a lot we can build on, of course we are going to miss our three seniors, but we have quite a few talented players coming back next year and we hope we can continue to show improvement and be right back where we want to be next year.”
