AUSTIN — As quickly as the Glenville-Emmons baseball team grabbed the lead Tuesday against Randolph it lost it.

In their Class 1A West Subsection matchup, the No. 6 seeded Wolverines (10-8 overall, 8-4 Southeast) battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead at Riverland Community College.

It didn’t last long as the No. 3 seeded Rockets (12-4 overall, 9-2 Gopher) came back with five runs in the fifth for a 7-6 lead. They went on to add six more in the sixth for a 13-6 win.

“We took the lead and things looked pretty good for us,” Glenville-Emmons head coach Louie Toulouse said. “We just weren’t able to hold on, I guess.”

In the fifth the Wolverines got things started with back-to-back singles with one out. After a strikeout Jake Kirsch and Isaiah Iverson followed with two walks. Logan Hansen drove in one run and Glenville-Emmons loaded the bases with a Spencer Kral single.

Jon Mittag unloaded the bases with a three-run triple that gave the Wolverines a seemingly comfortable four run lead.

Mittag, who started on the mound for Glenville-Emmons, worked himself into trouble by giving up two consecutive singles in the bottom of the fifth. Randolph’s Dennis Mulvihill drove in the first run of the comeback and Riley Thom added an RBI. The Rockets capped off the inning with a a single by No. 8 hitter Ryan Wheeler that scored two runs for a 7-6 lead.

“They’re deserving of a No. 3 seed,” Toulouse said. “They’re going to give the Nos. 1 and 2 a battle. They have a pretty good pitcher and they play pretty good defense.”

The Wolverines, however, did not play good defense. The team accounted for six errors in the game.

“We took that lead and basically all we had to do was come out in that next inning and make a couple of defensive plays,” Toulouse said. “Then we turned around and booted the ball a couple of times and threw it away. The floodgates opened and we couldn’t control it.”

In the sixth the Rockets sent 11 to the plate and Glenville made two errors, had a passed ball and a wild pitch in an inning marred by mistakes.

“It’s just one of those things where the kids have to learn to concentrate,” Toulouse said. “They can’t just give up because something bad happens. Hopefully it’s a learning situation for us.”

The Wolverines play again Thursday in the double elimination tournament against Goodhue, who lost 6-4 against Blooming Prairie.
