The Albert Lea softball team played a tight game with Faribault Tuesday until the bottom of the sixth inning when a grand slam spelled doom for the Tigers.
The Tigers (3-8 overall, 3-8 Big Nine) entered the sixth tied at 2-2 with the Falcons when Faribault connected on a grand slam to give them a 6-2 win.
Albert Lea had a chance to break the game open immediately in the first inning when they loaded the bases but were only able to score one run in the inning.
&8220;We couldn&8217;t get anything going after that,&8221; Tigers head coach Chad Feikema said.
Missed opportunities and stellar defensive play plagued Albert Lea the rest of the game.
The Tigers collected seven hits on the night but could not put together the big inning they needed to grab the lead as the Faribault defense prevented them from scoring twice.
&8220;We had some opportunities,&8221; Feikema said. &8220;Their shortstop took away two runs with two fantastic plays.&8221;
Dezeray Jacobs threw a complete game for Albert Lea in the loss as she collected three strikeouts, allowed five earned runs on 10 hits.
&8220;We just need to become more consistent,&8221; Feikema said.
Lauren Klick led the offense with a 2-for-4 night and Jacobs added an RBI for the Tigers.
