When the Naeve Alumni and Nurses Club held their annual spring luncheon on April 19, a very special rocking chair was gifted to Naeve Health Care Foundation.
Ted Myers, M.D., NHCF president, accepted the rocking chair from Alice Gleason, a Naeve nurse. This rocking chair belonged to Mary King, a graduate of the first class of Naeve Hospital School of Nursing in 1915.
King became superintendent of Naeve Hospital as well as director of nursing from 1923 through 1946.
During this time, she was also an X-ray technician. Mary furthered her education by attending the University of Minnesota to become a nurse anesthetist and served in that capacity at Naeve Hospital until her retirement.
Mary lived in the Palmer house where her rocking chair awaited her at the end of each day. Mary gave the chair to her roommate, Linda Golnik, a Naeve nurse, when Linda retired. Linda then passed it on to Edna Machacek, mother of Alice Gleason.
