A man from Austin was murdered Sunday in Philadelphia.

Beau Zabel, 23, moved six weeks ago from Austin to Philadelphia to be a math teacher. Philadelphia police say he was shot around 1:30 a.m. Sunday while walking home from a Starbucks coffee shop.

The Tribune was working on the story as of press time. It is understood he might have a Wells connection. Anyone with local ties to Zabel is welcome to call Sarah Stultz at 379-3435. Look to AlbertLeaTribune.com for details Monday as they emerge.

Zabel had especially wanted to teach in Philadelphia, according to one of his sisters, Natasha Newcomb.

“He really wanted to teach there. I’m not exactly sure why Philly was where he wanted to go, but that was the one,” Newcomb said.

Zabel’s page on the social networking Web site Facebook says he graduated from high school in Austin and got his bachelor’s degree last year from Augustana College in Illinois. He wrote that he had been accepted into the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows program to teach in city public schools and was going to Drexel University for graduate school.
