Bayside Skiers want you to meet the Flintstones at their weekly shows

Jane Edwards remembers one of the first times the Bayside Skiers went to a waterski tournament, only to have one of the judges comment about the team’s costumes (or lack of them): “Ick.”

It was at that moment Edwards decided that was one thing she could do something about. And she began to make costumes. Lots of them.

Over the last two years alone, Edwards has made more than 130 costumes for the team. This year, as the club presents “The Flintstones: Bayside Rocks Bedrock,” she’s made about 65 caveman, cavewoman, caveboy and cavegirl outfits.

She ordered her fabric last summer and has enjoyed working with wild animal prints in fun colors.

“It’s fun to be creative,” Edwards said. “I’m always looking for better colors on the water.

“I found lime green really sticks out. But ironically we don’t have any lime green this year,” she said with a chuckle.

And she thinks people will get a kick out of the hats for the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos. People will easily be able to pick out the main characters of Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm.

The biggest challenge, she said, is knowing who is skiing and guessing their sizes (over life jackets). “We never quite know who needs to be where,” she said. With the patterns for the ballet line skiers, she starts with the biggest costumes and cuts them down from there.

“I do costumes because it’s for the community,” Edwards said. “I want people to come out and enjoy the show.”

Not only did Edwards make the costumes, she also wrote this year’s show.

She ordered DVDs and watched the old shows, finally settling on the idea for the show.

“We were looking for a family-oriented show that would cross the generations,” said Doug Edwards, who is directing the show with his wife. “We want the show to be entertaining for the older crowd and fun for the younger kids.”

In the show, the ladies’ aid is planning to have a convention, and Fred is in charge of finding entertainment for it.

“Of course, he believes he has the greatest entertainment capabilities of all and of course he brags,” Doug Edwards. “Then Barney gets into the act.”

Fred brings the ski acts — doubles, trios, barefoot, ballet, swivel, jump, wakeboards and human pyramids — to Wilma for her approval.

Mike Johnson is featured as Fred, Mariah Howe as Wilma, Dale Stensrud as Barney, Mikki Tuohy as Betty, Molly Tuohy as Pebbles, Brayden Stensrud as Bamm-Bamm and Tyler Hobbie as Nimble Ned.

Jane Edwards said she’s extremely pleased with the cast. Mariah Howe played Velma in the Scooby-Doo shows, and Dale Stensrud, formerly a skier, is just acting this year.

Jane Edwards said she found it interesting that “The Flintstones” were actually based on the comedy “The Honeymooners.”

“It’s got a lot of humor and the story is based on women making fun of men,” she said. “My main objective is to have fun.”

The club will present a 2 p.m. July 4 show. Pre-show activities begin at 1:15 p.m.

Regular Thursday shows are at 7 p.m. starting next week. The pre-show will begin at 6:15 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. show planned for Labor Day.

Admission to the Bayside Ski Team’s shows is free, but the club does “pass the hat” to help defray expenses and keep the show on the water. Concessions are also available.
