The Albert Lea Colonels out-slugged New Richland in a 19-8 win Saturday at Hayek Field.
The Colonels had big innings in the first and second where they scored four and six runs to jump out to a 10-3 lead quickly.
Albert Lea only had eight hits in the game but worked with what the Reds gave them.
“They had a lot of walks and a few errors and we took advantage of it,” Colonels manager Bill Trygstad said.
Albert Lea drew 10 walks in the game and drew the bases loaded on walks in the sixth inning which led to nine runs. Devin Kaasa hit a two-run double to start the scoring in the inning as the Colonels sent 13 batters to the plate.
New Richland tried to make a game of it early when Aaron Gilliland hit a three-run homer in the first inning, but the Reds struggled to keep innings alive as they were thrown out at the plate twice.
“It’s become a rivalry,” Trygstad said. “We usually play them twice a year. It’s probably been around .500.”
The win completed a 2-1 week for Albert Lea as it won 2-0 against Waseca Wednesday and lost 10-6 to New Ulm Friday.
Against Waseca the Colonels got 8 2/3 stellar innings from Brandon Klukow who allowed five hits and struck out five.
The Colonels got on the board in the first when Ryan Wangen hit a solo shot and Andrew Behnke added an RBI double in the sixth for the 2-0 victory.
With only nine players Friday Albert Lea played strong against New Ulm and led 4-3 after sixth innings. But the Colonels ran out of steam in the late innings and New Ulm pushed seven runs across in the seventh and eighth inning to escape with a 10-6 win.
Devin Kaasa started for Albert Lea and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, only four were earned, on eight hits and struck out five.
