Albert Lea golfer Andrew Peterson tees off today at Golden Valley Country Club in the Minnesota Golf Association Mid Players Championship.
The Championship is a match play tournament spread out over three days to determine the best player 30 or older in Minnesota.
Peterson, 31, qualified for the event by shooting a 67 at Soldiers Memorial Field Golf Course in Rochester May 23. Peterson also qualified for the Minnesota State Players Championship held in Duluth at Northland Country Club June 24 through 26.
Peterson drew the No. 8 seed in today’s competition and will face Scott Westman from Purple Hawk Country Club in the first round. If Peterson wins he will play another round in the afternoon.
“I enjoy the competition,” Peterson said. “Any chance you get a chance to win one of these it’s fun.”
Peterson has played in the state amateur and the state open tournaments before and is excited for the opportunity to play in the match play tournaments.
“I want to do good now that I’m it,” Peterson said. “If I play similar to what I shot in qualifier, I’m confident I can win.”
The Minnesota State Players Championship field is open to all ages.
Peterson had the best score at the May 23 qualifier at Soldiers Memorial Field Golf Course. He shot 33, 34 to qualify for both tournaments.
