Patriotism and righteousness

As we show our patriotism on Flag Day this Saturday, let us pray for our nation. In recent weeks leaders in two states have endorsed radical moral change. The Supreme Court of California ruled that the definition of marriage as one man and one woman is unconstitutional, that the law passed a few years ago by the people of California to uphold marriage is wrong. In Colorado the legislature and the governor endorsed a bill that, along with other outrages, opens public restrooms to people of both genders.

About three thousand years ago, before the nation of Israel had a king, God appointed judges over His people. During those several generations, the Bible says that “every man did what was right in his own eyes.” Yes, there were periods when the people listened to the gracious word of the Lord from the judges, and they did turn away from their own ways and did follow the ways of the Lord. However, they repeatedly turned back, and every man did what was right in his own eyes.

Today in America the majority want to chart their own moral course. They want to be the captain of their own ship and to ignore what God says about the correct way to live. Most people think that we can invent our own morality and ignore the Ten Commandments.

The Bible says that there is a way that seems right to man but that the end of that way is the way of death. We cannot deny God’s truth and avoid consequences. Sin brings God’s judgment, and for nations that judgment comes on earth, and for individuals the judgment is ultimately in eternal hell.

God calls us to forsake our wicked ways and to turn back to His ways. He says, “If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land,” (2 Chron. 7:14).

The captain of the Titanic ignored warnings, and hundreds perished in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Now is the time for America to steer back on God’s course.

People who care about the spiritual welfare of this nation must earnestly pray for national spiritual revival, repentance of sin and surrender to Jesus Christ. We must also lovingly call others to turn from sin and to turn to the Savior, Jesus Christ. Finally, people who realize our nation’s need, must work to uphold and promote righteousness in government, to urge elected leaders to do what is right, and to work for the election of leaders who will boldly stand for godly principles. America needs more George Washington’s, the man who said that it is impossible to govern this world without God and the Bible. May God bless America.
