Perhaps expand the bus system

Here’s an idea for Cedar Valley Services that might prove fruitful: Consider expanding the bus system in Albert Lea.

Albert Lea Transit caters to senior citizens. The buses stop at the places senior citizens generally live, and they go to the places that senior citizens generally visit. And that makes sense because, after all, 85 percent of the ridership is senior citizens.

However, with the increased cost of gasoline, it might be profitable to give working people alternative ways to travel to work. It’s unlikely the cost of gas is going down, so more and more people will rely on public transportation.

We realize the funding for the bus system comes largely through the Minnesota Department of Transportation, so we aren’t suggesting Cedar Valley Services leap without looking.

But look it should. If it’s not workable yet, it might be in the near future. Who knows? Perhaps there could be a way for the expansion to pay for itself.
