Registration for self-defense classes to begin Wednesday

Young Americans Schools of Self-Defense will hold its registration for the Summer 2008 youth self-defense classes at the Albert Lea YMCA in Albert Lea on Wednesday. Children ages 3 to 16 may register for the class at the Albert Lea Family YMCA from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Instruction will then begin on Wednesday, June 11, and will be ongoing for ten weeks. Classes will be held each Wednesday from 5 to 5:45 p.m.. Jeff Wood, 3rd Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, is the head instructor.

Students in the Young Americans program are taught non-aggressive, non-counterstriking self-defense techniques and safety awareness. The students learn in a fun, interactive environment. Personal esteem, respect for others, self-discipline and physical fitness is also promoted in this program. New students will be eligible to earn the certified yellow belt at the conclusion of the semester; returning students earn higher belts.

Regarding costs, students pay $5 a week for classes. A scholarship program is available for students on public assistance. For further information, please contact the Minnesota State Office of Young Americans at (952)997-7732.
