Albert Lea High School Drama and Music Departments are excited to announce the fall musical for the coming school year will be Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” Auditions for the cast will be held about the third week of school in September and rehearsals will begin soon after. The show will be performed on Nov. 20, 21, and 22 in the high school auditorium. New English and drama teacher, Mollie Wilken, will be the head director, assisted by Diane Heaney and John Fure.
“Cinderella” is the magical story of a young woman who is kept busy with chores by her domineering stepmother and annoying stepsisters. She is rescued for one night by her fairy godmother who turns her into a stunning princess as she goes to the prince’s ball and captivates his heart. In her hurry to return home before midnight, she drops a glass slipper. The prince searches for his mystery girl by trying the slipper on every maiden in the kingdom.
Many adults will remember sitting in front of the television as children in the 1960s and ‘70s watching the TV production starring Leslie Ann Warren as Cinderella and Celeste Holm as the fairy godmother. A more recent television re-make of the show starred the singer, Brandi, as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as the godmother.
There will be many parts for both male and female actors, singers and dancers as well as instrumental players for the pit band. Parents are also encouraged to get involved and to help with costumes and set building. Students are encouraged to watch for more announcements about the show as school begins in September.
