Company leads disaster relief drive

Minnesota Corrugated Box is spearheading a drive to provide disaster relief for people who suffered losses in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota as a result of floods and tornadoes.

The drive is called “Let’s Fill the Truck,” said Mike Moore, one of the company executives. People can help fill that truck by bringing donations to the company at 2200 Y.H. Hanson Ave. in Albert Lea between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday. Just look for the big tent next to a big truck. There is another collection point at the Hy-Vee grocery store in Austin.

The company already has $7,000 and 11 pallots of food from the corporate phase of the drive. On Friday, it switches to the community phase. KATE/KCPI radio will be at the company and KAUS radio will be at the Austin site.

People can bring cash, which will be delivered to American Red Cross chapters in Freeborn and Mower counties and to chapters in Iowa. People can bring nonperishable food, which will be given to food banks in the region.

Moore said the relief agencies tell him that certain items are in particular need: peanut butter, tuna, macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper and canned fruit. Some supplies are needed, too, such as towels, paper towels, toilet paper, bedding, toiletries and gloves.

Moore said Larson Contracting and Minnesota Corrugated Box are having employee drives Friday. He said Hormel gave three pallots of Spam.

He said the company is holding the drive because the Krebsbach family, the majority owner of MCB, wanted to help many of the company’s customers who live in the affected areas. Floods and tornadoes struck northern Iowa and southern Minnesota during this year’s stormy spring.

Deliveries to the relief agencies will be made next week.
