Everything came apart at the wrong time for the United South Central American Legion baseball team Monday night against Luverne in an 8-7 loss in the district playoffs.

As Post 210 tried to fight its way through the consolation bracket, five errors and four walks cost it a chance of moving to the next round.

Post 123 scored three runs on USC five errors and had four walks score.

“It was a tough ball game to lose when you commit five errors and walk four people,” said Post 210 coach Pat Frank.

Two of those errors came in the sixth inning with USC clinging to a 7-6 lead. But a walk and two consecutive errors put a runner on third who came around to score on a sacrifice fly to give Luverne the 8-7 win.

Post 210 starter Nick Fure did a nice job of limiting Post 123 to four hits, but there was little he could do about the defense.

USC had two opportunties to pad its lead, but left the bases loaded in the first inning and the seventh. Post 210 stranded 11 runners in the game.

“It’s a frustrating way to end the season,” Frank said. “I don’t think we had five errors in the last five games.”

USC scored two runs in the top of the first when William Huper connected for a two-out, two-run double to put Post 210 up 2-0. Huper finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Luverne grabbed a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third inning, but USC came back for five runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 advantage. A.J. Dreyer plated three runs with a double and Ned Kalis added an RBI single in the fifth.

The loss ended an otherwise successful season for USC as it won 12 games and made the district tournament for the first time in four years.
