Norwegians to host stemne event in Albert Lea

The Sognefjordlag in America invites people interested in Norwegian culture to join it at a stemne in Albert Lea, from Aug. 7 to 9. Pre-registration is requested no later than Aug. 1.

Thursday, Aug. 7, events will be at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, next to the Freeborn County Fairgrounds for a tour of the Historical Village, research and genealogy work and time to visit with other Norskies.

Friday, Aug. 8 events will be held at the Sons of Norway lodge near the City Arena. In the morning, there will be films and slides of Norway, information about the lag’s trip to Norway in 2009, and a Hardanger fiddle presentation. From noon to 2 p.m. the group will take the Pelican Breeze tour and lunch on Lake Albert Lea. At 4 p.m. a wood carver will present, back at the Sons of Norway lodge. Pre-dinner entertainment and a banquet, will be followed by the Uff Da Band after dinner.

Saturday, Aug. 9, will start with a Norwegian breakfast served by the Sons of Norway lodge. Tom Hanson, former diplomat, will speak on “Norway, Then and Now.” In the afternoon there will be demonstrations of various Norwegian cooking and crafts. An evening banquet and program with Al Batt as entertainer will conclude the time together.

Costs are: Registration for all three days, $25/person; boat tour, $15 per person; each banquet, $11 per person; Norwegian breakfast, $8 per person.

All are welcome to join this annual meeting of the Norwegians from western Norway.

People don’t even need to be Norwegian to attend.
