Yabba-Dabba Ski!

The Fourth of July in Albert Lea wouldn’t be complete without a show by the Bayside Skiers.
And this year, the water ski show team is planning a yabba dabba-do time for audiences. The team will present “The Flintstones: Bayside Rocks Bedrock.” The holiday show begins at 2 p.m. Pre-show activities, featuring the team’s younger skiers, start at 1:15 p.m.
“We were looking for a family-oriented show that would cross the generations,” said Doug Edwards, who, along with his wife, Jane, has put the show together. “We want the show to be entertaining for the older crowd and fun for the younger kids.”
Edwards was also the show director for the team’s highly successful “Scooby-Doo” shows in 2005 and 2006.
Edwards said that even if audiences arrive late to the show, they’ll be able to connect quickly with what is going on.
“People already know the characters and their personalities,” Edwards said.
In the show, the ladies’ aid is planning to have a convention, and Fred is in charge of finding entertainment for it.
“Of course, he believes he has the greatest entertainment capabilities of all and of course he brags,” Edwards said. “Then Barney gets into the act.”
Fred brings the ski acts — doubles, trios, barefoot, ballet, swivel, jump, wakeboards and human pyramids — to Wilma for her approval.
Mike Johnson is featured as Fred, Mariah Howe as Wilma, Dale Stensrud as Barney, Mikki Tuohy as Betty, Molly Tuohy as Pebbles, Brayden Stensrud as Bamm-Bamm and Tyler Hobbie as Nimble Ned.
Jane Edwards has some 65 costumes for the show. There are the main characters’ trademark clothing and plenty of animal prints for everyone else in the show. The Loyal Order of Water Buffalos hats even make an appearance.
If you miss the July 4 show, you can still catch regular Thursday evening shows all summer long through Labor Day (with the exception of fair week). The pre-show will begin at 6:15 p.m. The main show will start at 7 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. show planned for Labor Day.
The team plans to compete at the Midwest Regional Show Ski Tournament July 26 and 27 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Division 2 Nationals in the Quad Cities area on Aug. 2 and 3.
Edwards said it’s a great group that picks up members who are not into classical sports and well as those who are. “It’s as competitive as you want it to be,” he said. “Everybody gets to come and play.”
Admission to the Bayside Ski Team’s shows is free, but the club does “pass the hat” to help defray expenses and keep the show on the water. Concessions are also available.
