Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the second car wreck on Freeborn County Road 34, which killed two people, according to authorities.
Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office Detective Will Beers said law enforcement officials have received the blood tests back from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and “it is as we suspected. There was some alcohol involved.”
The specific blood alcohol numbers could not yet be released.
The wreck occurred after a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche sport-utility truck carrying six people went into the washed out area of County Road 34, landed on top of a steel culvert and crashed into the southside portion of the washout.
Kelly Jo Abrego, 25, of Myrtle and Kelly John Pechumer, 37, of Alden died from injuries sustained from the crash.
Beers said the Sheriff’s Office also received the blackbox of the pickup, but because the investigation is ongoing, he could not release details about its results.
The box would reveal information on the vehicle speed and braking, along with whether the individuals inside were wearing seat belts.
He estimated more details of the incident would be released in about a week.
