Weekend Planner: Relay for Life, benefits, festivals top weekend events

The Sixth Annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Freeborn County Relay will be held at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. It runs until 6 a.m. Saturday.

Cancer survivors will walk a lap at 6:15 p.m. and luminaries will be lit at dusk.

The community event brings people together to remember loved ones, inspire others and celebrate life. The money raised funds lifesaving research, education, advocacy and service programs.

Food will be available for purchase and games will be set up for the kids.

In addition, Glenville and Hartland will hold their community festivals. Glenville’s schedule appears on the On the Road page today.

Hartland’s festival will take place Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. with a softball game, kids’ carnival, games and family fun in the city park and bingo in the fire hall. From 4 to 7 p.m., home-based business will be set up in city hall. The firemen’s relief barbecue dinner starts at 5 p.m. in city hall. There will be a street dance at 8 p.m. at the Hartland Pub.

Following is a roundup of other events happening in the area this weekend.

Friday, Aug. 8

– The teachers’ art exhibit will be open at the Albert Lea Art Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– The Pelican Breeze will host a pizza cruise at 6 p.m. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m.; call 383-2630.

Saturday, Aug. 9

– There will be a celebration of Dale Wangen’s life from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn ballroom in Austin. There will be a silent auction, bake sale and raffle. There will also be a Huckley Buck Tournament starting at noon. Registration runs from 11 a.m. to noon. Wangen died June 12 as a result of an auto accident when heavy rains washed out a section of Freeborn County Road 34.

– Bicycle owners can take part in the “Lite-A-Bike” event to be held in the parking lot of the Freeborn County Government Center from noon to 4 p.m. Freemond Madson Post 447 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring the event, which includes putting reflective tape on bikes. The tape will be placed on pedals, handlebars, front and back fenders and frames.

– Gary’s second annual corn and brat feed to honor all troops who have served the country will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at American Legion Post 56, 142 N. Broadway Ave. Donations will be accepted.

– The Pelican Breeze will host a narrated cruise at 4 p.m.

– The Albert Lea Singles & Solo Parents will hold a singles dance with music by Buck Hollow from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the New Richland American Legion Club. Admission is $7 for members and $8 for non-members.

Sunday, Aug. 10

– The Albert Lea Daybreakers Kiwanis Club will host a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion Club, 142 N. Broadway Ave. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 years and younger. Tickets are available from club members and at the door.

– The Pelican Breeze will host a brunch cruise from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Reservations are needed by 4 p.m. Saturday; call 383-2630.

– The Pelican Breeze will host a narrated cruise at 1:30 p.m.

– Big Ben & The Brians Band will provide the music for the free concert at the Edgewater Park bandshell beginning at 1:30 p.m. The group plays country, old-time waltzes, polkas and more. Members include Ben Stuart, Brian Raichle and Brian Klouse.
