Albert Lea native speaks at Mankato event

Former Albert Lean Joseph Altfillisch was the featured speaker at the 10th annual Fall Elegance Dinner and Dance, held Sept. 13 at the Alltel Civic Center and Arena in Mankato. Approximately 700 people, primarily those with disabilities who resident in the greater Mankato area, attended. Altfillisch spoke about his experiences as well as the activities in which he was been involved since leaving Albert Lea.
The event’s purpose is to honor those who contribute in a variety of ways to the community. One of the sponsors of the program is LEEP (Leisure Education for Exceptional People). Altfillisch is a member of LEEP and also on its advisory council.
Altfillisch is the son of Gary and Stephanie Altfillisch of Albert Lea. He is a 1996 graduate of Albert Lea High School and moved that year to a group home in Mankato, under the auspices of Elm Homes Inc. He now lives in North Mankato.
Altfillisch has benefited from the many programs and opportunities provided for people with disabilities in the Mankato area. His goal is to live independently.
