Ice cream creator

I scream, you scream. We all scream for ice cream.

And if all goes well for Brendon Moise, everyone will be screaming for Minty Miracle ice cream.

Moise, 16, a junior at Albert Lea High School, is a contestant in Cold Stone Creamery’s i-Mix Contest. He first heard about the contest through the Cold Stone Creamery Birthday Club, of which he is a member. “They sent me an item about the contest, and I decided to try it,” he said.

He created his own signature creation of mint ice cream, brownies, fudge and chocolate shavings and named it “Minty Miracle.” He also had to fill out an application and describe how he would market it.

There were nearly 10,000 students between the ages of 13 and 19 who applied to get into the contest, and Moise was one of 1,350 students who actually got into the first bracket when it launched on Aug. 11.

Moise’s Minty Miracle is ranked No. 19 in the contest this week. Rankings are based on votes. Each time someone goes to Cold Stone Creamery and gets a code, he or she can cast an on-line vote for him at www.imixamerica.com. People can type in the code, Brendon’s name and Albert Lea’s zip code. They can vote each time they get a new code.

On Oct. 1, the field will be narrowed to the top 125 vote-getters. On Nov. 16, the top 20 vote-getters will be announced, and in January, the grand-prize winner will be announced. The winner will receive $30,000 in prizes, including a car, travel, electronics and cell phone products and services.

Moise said he thinks his creation is pretty good, and others have agreed.

“It’s very good,” said Cathy Purdie, marketing coordinator at Trail’s Travel Center, where the Albert Lea Cold Stone Creamery is located. “It’s very refreshing. It’s my daughter’s favorite.”

Added Cold Stone Manager Kim Haney, “And who doesn’t like chocolate?”

Moise said he’s stirred together Minty Miracle about five times, and has bought it himself another five times. He’s handed out coupons from the store to offer people an incentive to buy his treat.

He said his friends have asked him how they could get in the contest, and offer him suggestions on ways to use his prizes.

“It’s so cool to have a local kid be a part of this,” said Purdie. “It’s so do-able. Let’s put Albert Lea on the map with this national contest.”

When he’s not at school, Moise is employed at Hy-Vee. He’s the son of Marlene Carpenter of Albert Lea and Frantz Moise of Bloomington. He has one sister, Tatiana.

He enjoys playing basketball for fun and one day hopes to design basketball shoes.
