Albert Lea defender Sophie Miller was named to the Class A all-state team for the second year in a row.
Last season as a sophomore Miller was named honorable mention all-state, but after putting together a strong offensive season in addition to her usual strong defense Miller was named all-state outright.
“I’m really proud of it because last year it was all-state honorable mention and this year it’s actually being named to the all-state team,” Miller said. “It just makes me really happy because I’ve worked really hard.”
Miller had 10 goals and eight assists playing primarily as a defender. Miller’s offensive output increased this season as Tigers head coach Rick Barnhill moved her to a forward position late in games when the team needed more offense. Miller scored the game-tying game in the section final against Willmar and also scored a number of goals from distance off set pieces.
“It’s well deserved,” Barnhill said. “Her stats are so much better than they were last year and she’s still the influential defender. She has pretty darn good offensive stats and that’s as a part time offensive player.”
