Family of Susan DeVries: ‘It just doesn’t happen to people like us’

As they watched the new home of their loved ones being built Sunday afternoon, family members of Susan DeVries said they can’t wait until Tuesday to hug their family and see the reactions to their new home.

They had flown in from across the country to witness the home makeover, which is part of the ABC TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” Up until last Tuesday when the news came out about the makeover, it was something they never thought would happen to one of their own family members.

When the DeVries family — which is made up of father Dirk, mother Susan and children April, Derik and Hanna — found out last Tuesday they would be the recipients of the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” they were able to quickly contact a few family members to tell them the news, and then they were off to a vacation to Niagara Falls, N.Y. They will return Tuesday.

Gathered in the VIP tent looking on at the site Sunday afternoon were Susan’s parents, Eileen and Fritz VanderVegt; sisters Gloria Hoyles of Colorado, Diane Black of Washington and Leanne Sytsma of Washington; and nieces Kayla and Emma Sytsma, also of Washington. The family said they arrived at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

“I just think this is the most fantastic thing I’ve ever been involved in,” said Susan’s mother, Eileen. “Every day, something new happens to amaze us.”

She said when she found out that her daughter’s family had been chosen for the show, Fritz had to “scrape me off the ceiling.”

“It just does not happen to people like us,” she said.

Out of the entire family, Leanne was the only one who thought Susan’s family would actually be lucky enough to be picked for the makeover. Leanne bought her plane tickets to Minnesota two weeks ago. The rest bought theirs once they heard the news.

The family said Susan will be amazed when she sees the new house, and the kids will be shocked and speechless.

“We are so excited,” Hoyles said. “The building is incredible. The house is wonderful.”

The family said they are grateful for how nicely they’ve been treated since they arrived.

They described Susan as a funny person with a huge personality, who is always in the middle of everything. Dirk is the same way, they said.
