The postseason run ended for the United South Central girls’ tennis team Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to Maple River.
The Rebels were coming off a sixth-place finish at state a year ago, but were unable to make a return trip this year as they lost to their rival the Eagles. USC will now have to see how many individuals it can move through the section tournament which begins Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Rebels picked up just two wins Wednesday, both from their doubles teams in a loss that ended the team portion of the season.
Kellie Robbins and Molly Yokiel defeated Kenzie Volz and Tabitha Woitas 6-0, 7-5. At No. 3 doubles Rachel Mattick and Dani Roberts won 6-0, 7-5 (7-3).
“Maple River is a strong team,” USC head coach Kim Johnson said. “We knew going in that we had to win at all three doubles and at one of the singles spots. All the matches were close and the girls played their hearts out and that’s all you can ask from them.”
At No. 1 singles Carolyn Schmitz won the first set 6-3 against Maple River’s Heather Annis, but dropped the following two 2-6, 1-6. Ali Ramsely played a tight match against Mandy Stencel but lost 2-6, 6-7 (6-8). Haleigh Korn and Katie Lornez both fell 0-6, 0-6 in their singles matches. Cami Christian and Megan Allis lost 3-6, 1-6 at No. 2 doubles to Brooke Osmundson and Josie Walters.
