There was a grain dryer Tuesday morning on fire at a farm on County Road 26 north of Hayward. Freeborn County sheriff’s deputies reported there were visible flames. The fire was contained to the dryer and did not impact grain bins and other farm equipment nearby.

The farm is at 22170 810th Ave. It belongs to Gary Schrad, who resides in Albert Lea. The estimated time of the fire is about 6:30 a.m. and it was called in by Bob Muillenburg at about 6:45 a.m. Schrad was called to the scene near 7 a.m., he said. The Hayward Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

After the fire was out, corn was left charred and in clumps at the bottom of the dryer, surrounded by yellow corn. Piles of corn were formed as the inside of the dryer was emptied. Schrad said he hadn’t determined the amount of corn lost in the blaze. A steady, cold November rain fell Tuesday morning.
