Greg “Squirrel” Earl, 52, of Turtle River, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Bemidji State University Gymnasium-John Glas Field House in Bemidji. A memorial visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on today at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the BSU.
Squirrel was born Jan. 23, 1956, in Albert Lea, the son of Gerald and Deanne (Prosser) Earl. He was raised and educated in Albert Lea. After he graduated from Albert Lea High School he moved to Bemidji to attend Bemidji State University. Shortly after moving to Bemidji he started working at and managing Silver Springs in Walker Bay and the Storm Shelter in Laporte. He later bought the Donat Hole which he renamed the Squirrel’s Nest in Hungry Hollow. He also was a partner in owning the Bemidji Speedway for a couple of years at this time. About 10 years ago he bought the 71 Bar in Turtle River and ran both bars for a year before moving to Turtle River and running the 71 Bar only and selling the Squirrel’s Nest. He owned and operated the bar for several years before selling it and building the Liquor Lodge with others. He re-purchased the 71 Bar and has been running it since.
He played hockey in high school and always enjoyed watching the sport. He liked to fish, especially with the hook ’em and cook ’em crew. He was a great story teller and loved to play games, whether it be darts or golf or a number of others. He was a BSU Hockey supporter. He truly enjoyed the outdoors, but mostly he just loved to be around people.
He is survived by son, Brandon (Heidi Eck) Earl of Bemidji; daughter, Michaela Holmgren of Bemidji; father, Gerald Earl of Westbrook; sister, Julie (Randy) Vandewiele of Windom; brother, Steve (Carmel) Earl of Blair, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
