Tigers get even with Anoka in 46-17 win

The Albert Lea wrestling team was bent on revenge Saturday and entered its dual against Anoka with a noticeable edge.
The Tigers (7-3) were fed up of falling short against the Tornadoes and made sure a last second defeat would not occur this time out. Albert Lea built up a 37-0 lead in a 46-17 romp over Anoka Saturday in Anoka.
The dual, dubbed “The Big Show” was certainly not as thrilling as the past two duals where the Tornadoes pulled out wins in the heavyweight match for the dual victory.
“It was a nice payback,” said Albert Lea head coach Larry Goodnature. “Knocking off a ranked team ahead of us is good for our confidence.”
Goodnature said he noticed an edge about the team Saturday and it showed on the mat as the Tigers were aggressive all afternoon long. Albert Lea won five matches by pinfall while only losing one by fall.
“The kids were aggressive,” Goodnature said. “The kids wanted revenge.”
The dual was nearly over as quickly as it began as the Tigers picked up bonus points from the get-go. In the first eight matches Albert Lea had four pins and a major decision. Carter Kortan added a 3-2 decision to give the Tigers a 37-0 advantage.
Cory Hansen, ranked No. 1 at 112 pounds by The Guillotine, won with a pin 28 seconds into his match against Clay Wherley. Adam Clark, Kyle Kriewall and Cody Hansen all followed with pins after Dalton Westerland earned a 5-0 decision.
Cody Hansen, ranked No. 1 at 125, moved up to 135 Saturday and Kriewall came in at 130.
The upperweights were expected to go to Anoka and the Tornadoes picked up their first match wins at 152 and 160 with Jake Waste and Jake Begin. Waste earned a 7-2 decision over Adam Kermes at 152 and Begin pinned Conner Kortan at 3:01.
The 7-2 loss didn’t tell the whole story for Kermes’ match. Waste won the Christmas Tournament last weekend and is ranked as the No. 3 wrestler at 145. Kermes actually led 2-1 after the first period and Waste scored a takedown as the third period came to an end.
Anoka was without three injured starters Saturday. Zak Threadgill, ranked No. 9 at 135 and a state entrant, was out because of injury. Along with Threadgill, the Tornadoes were without Kyle Begin and No. 1-ranked Jake Kettler at 285.
Albert Lea is still without Logan Kortan and J.D. Seiler because of injury.
