Former Albert Lea standout Ben Woodside set the career scoring mark at North Dakota State University Monday night against North Arizona in a 90-68 win.
Woodside, a redshirt senior, broke Denver TenBroek’s record of 1,813 points with a layup at the 13 minute, 10 second mark of the second half. Woodside finished with 24 points and 10 assists and now has 1, 820 points in 96 career games.
Woodside also broke NDSU’s career record for free throws made in Nov. this season.
Woodside said he got a text message from Matt Addington, his high school coach at Albert Lea before the game which encouraged him to take care of breaking the record.
“I got a text message from my high school coach today, he told me to go beat the record, get it over with, and put it in the rear view mirror,” Woodside said in a postgame press conference Monday night. “That’s exactly what I was thinking.”
Bison head coach Saul Phillips had high praise for Woodside following the record-breaking performance.
“The amount of energy spent worrying about this record is about zero,” Phillips said. “Ben’s handled it in a class manner. It’s fitting that he breaks the record on a night that he had 10 assists. Ben Woodside is not just a dynamic scorer, he’s a terrific basketball player, he’s a great teammate, and one of the best leaders you’re ever going to find.”
Woodside finished the night 7-for-11 from the field and 10-for-12 from the line.
NDSU improved to 7-4 on the season and the record was another crowning achievement for Woodside this season.
Woodside scored 60 points against Stephen F. Austin at the Drake Hy-Vee Classic a week earlier in a 112-111 triple overtime loss. The 60 points were an NCAA-high this season and his 30 made free throws tied an NCAA mark held by Pete Maravich.
The Bison nearly knocked off Southern Cal Saturday in a 61-57 loss. Woodside gave NDSU a 57-56 lead with 1:47 left in the game, but the Trojans scored the game’s final five points for the win.
Woodside has started to garner some attention from NBA scouts this season. Back in November when the Bison played against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, scouts from the Phoenix Suns were in attendance.
