Two days after a pool record was set in Albert Lea, another two more fell Thursday.

Rochester Century swimmer Brian Kiel broke the previous pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke Tuesday with a time of 58.07 seconds. On Thursday John Marshall’s Kendrick Bachman did one better.

Bachman shattered that mark with his blistering time of 55.72 and also broke the Minnesota high school record of 55.83, set by Aaron Shapely, of MInnetonka in 1992.

When Bachman saw Kiel’s time from Tuesday he decided something needed to be done.

“Tuesday night I heard that Brian … swam a 58.07, I just kind of got this fire started in me,” Bachman said. “After that all I could think about was that for the next two days. I just got in and gave it all I had.”

Although Bachman had times near the pool record, he had swam a 58.57 in his regular suit, he didn’t want to leave any doubt as he donned a BlueSeventy suit, which runs about $395.

“He knew he could probably get it in his regular suit, but he figured see why not see what he can go with his BlueSeventy,” said Rockets head coach Paul Bachman.

It was another round of can-you-top-this between Kiel and Bachman. The two have a friendly rivalry and have raced since they were both 8 years old, each trying to up the ante every time they get in the pool.

“Me and Brian we’ve been racing since we were 8, it’s 10 years in the making,” Bachman said. “Every time we compete against each other we try to get the best out of each other and we do.”

Albert Lea head coach Jon Schmitz was glad to be a part of the record-breaking performance.

“It’s the fastest time ever and to do that in our pool, we take a little bit of pride in it that,” said Albert Lea head coach Jon Schmitz. “It’s one of the better records in the state.”

Bachman also won the 100 butterfly as John Marshall cruised to a 95-66 victory.

Despite the loss, Schmitz was pleased with the performance of the Tigers.

“My kids rose to the occasion because they could see some special things happening,” he said. “Tonight was a very positive meet for us, everybody improved times, we won close races and that was really an accomplishment.”

The Big Nine Conference meet is next for Albert Lea. The meet will take place next Saturday in Faribault.
