Rochester Century overwhelmed the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team Tuesday in a 94-55 victory at Albert Lea High School behind a lights-out shooting performance.
The Panthers (5-17 overall, 4-12 Big Nine) shot nearly 60 percent from the field and couldn’t miss at times as they pulled away from the Tigers (1-21, 0-15) in the second half.
Century used a 15-5 run in early in the second half to build a 28-point lead six minutes into the half.
“I feel like we play really well for periods of time,” Albert Lea head coach Chad Feikema said. “What we can’t do is play well for an entire 36 minutes. As I told the guys afterward, we’ll play really well for 20 to 25 minutes a game, then the rest of the game we have these lapses where we don’t play very well at all.”
The Panthers got out in transition during the first half and were able to build a 15-point lead at break, but the Tigers had battled throughout the first half to keep it close.
Albert Lea got down by 11 with nine minutes play in the first half, but was able to climb to within six before Century went on an 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 14 with 5:51 to go.
Dan Fleissner was a force inside for Century, making an array of jump shots and shots from deep inside the paint. Fleissner finished with a game-high 22 points.
Ater Manyang and Cody Johnson each had 13 points and Marcus Eckert added 11. Manyang did his damage down low while Johnson lit it up from the perimeter. Johnson went 5-for-7 from the field and went 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
“I just felt our lack of communication on defense and the fact that we were slow allowed them to get easy shots,” Feikema said.
Brandon Antl led the Tigers with 14 points as he was able to get to the hoop against the Panthers.
“I thought Brandon played very well, one of his better games of the season,” Feikema said. “If we can get that consistently these last couple of games that will help us out a lot.”
The trouble for Albert Lea has been confidence and with a young team, finding that confidence has been difficult. Feikema said he sees a confident team in practice, but that hasn’t translated to game situations.
“I think one of the things that’s frustrating for me as a coach is that we are a very good practice team,” Feikema said. “We do very well in practice. We have good effort, we have strong practices, but we don’t play with the same type of confidence in games as we do in practice. As a result we forget some of the fundamental things that I know we’re capable of doing, but for some reason we don’t remember to do those things in games for an entire 36 minutes.”
