Assessments set up irregular standards

I recently read the article “Report: No Child Left Behind unattainable” from Friday, Feb. 20, in the Tribune. I would like to know why this topic on failed requirements on the Minnesota assessment test is just being brought up now. I feel like we have been dealing with this for a while, and it shouldn’t be a huge shocker for people. Although there were some very well made points in the article that I liked.

One point made was about how our high school should not be judged on people who do not meet the certain guidelines for the test because there are students deeply engaged in these tests. Many teachers simply cannot keep up with the irregular standards set up by the assessment. I feel also that school districts should not have to take these tests in hope of doing well so money isn’t taken from their schools. Instead, I completely agree that we should take the tests simply to see the growth and improvement in our scores over the years.

Thank you for putting this article in the newspaper because maybe now we can start making some new changes in our school district.
