Boy Scouts kick off annual Scouting For Food campaign

Local Scouts from the Twin Valley Council are doing a “Good Turn” in Freeborn County as they help fight hunger as part of the annual Scouting for Food campaign.

Started in 1988, when Scouts collected an estimated 65 million cans of nonperishable food nationwide, Scouting for Food has grown into a annual event conducted in Freeborn County during the month of March.

A number of local businesses have agreed to sponsor their own food drive during the Scouting For Food campaign. Local Scouts are making arrangements to help collect the food from area businesses and to distribute the food collected to the Salvation Army and the Ecumenical Food Shelf at First Presbyterian Church. The Scouting for Food program represents the largest donation source for most of these groups helping to feed those in need throughout the year.

This weekend Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews began distributing door hangers in area neighborhoods. Scouts request that you place your bag of non-perishable canned goods in front of your door by 9 a.m. Saturday. Scouts will collect the food before 11 a.m. on the same day.

You can also participate by dropping off food or monetary donations from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the main entrance to the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. HyVee and Nelson’s Market Place will also have available food collection carts from March 7-14.

If you have any questions or if you would like to participate or start a Scouting For Food campaign, please call this year’s chairman, Steve Brownlow, at 379-5723.
