A former Albert Lea firefighter and part-time New Richland police officer was sentenced Monday in Freeborn County District Court to at most 10 years probation and 14 days in jail.

Alan Nielsen pleaded guilty in recent months to two of four charges related to third-degree burglary and receiving stolen property.

Last August, he was charged with one count of third-degree burglary, two counts of receiving stolen property and one count of fifth-degree possession of methamphetamine precursors with the intent to manufacture.

Corey Farris, the South Central Drug Task Force officer with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, said at the time of the arrest Nielsen had been investigated for meth manufacturing and sale of meth, along with a burglary.

His charges came in the form of two files, one for the third-degree burglary charge, and another for the charges of possession and receiving stolen property.

In December, Nielsen pleaded guilty to the burglary charge. He was sentenced last week to five years probation and 14 days in the Freeborn County Jail for this charge, with credit for two days already served.

In February, Nielsen pleaded guilty to one of the receiving stolen property charges and the remaining stolen property charge and the possession charge were both dismissed.

The sentence for the receiving stolen property conviction — up to 10 years probation and 14 days in jail — will run concurrent with the burglary sentence.

His other conditions for both convictions are to obey the law, to not use any alcohol or mood-altering chemicals, to not be at places where alcohol is primarily sold or served, to forfeit any weapons, to obtain and maintain full-time employment, to comply with random testing, to attend a cognitive skills class and to give a DNA sample.

For the burglary charge, Nielsen was sentenced to an imposed fine of $1,000, an $81 fee, and 40 hours of community service.

For the receiving stolen property charge, he was sentenced to a fine of $6,000 if he violates his probation.

He must pay $2,285 in restitution for the stolen items.
