Each winter a crew from Mertens Commercial Fishing of Waterville comes to the Albert Lea area and use seining nets to harvest carp in the ice covered lakes. On Monday the crew was at the channel near the Bancroft Bridge. And on Tuesday they were working on the bay next to Grace Street and Lakeview Boulevard. These carp will be sent to New York to be processed into gefilte and other fish treats. Incidentally, no game fish were harmed during this annual harvesting. Those lucky fish were thrown back into Fountain Lake through a hole in the ice.
