The Albert Lea Salvation Army has received $27,000 to help newly unemployed community members pay for gas, food, utility bills and other basic needs.

The money will be used exclusively for families and individuals who are in crisis as a result of unemployment occurring after Oct. 1.

The $27,000 came from The Salvation Army Central Territory ($18,000) and from matching donations made by Salvation Army supporters in Albert Lea and across Minnesota and North Dakota ($9,000). The Central Territory oversees 225 Salvation Army locations in 11 Midwestern states.

“These grant dollars have come at a critical time,” said Capt. Jim Brickson, administrator of the Albert Lea Salvation Army. “We will use this money to help as many community members as possible during these difficult economic times.”

The Salvation Army Northern Division has been providing social and spiritual services to Minnesota and North Dakota communities since 1886. To volunteer with The Salvation Army or to make a donation, call (800) SAL-ARMY or visit www.thesalarmy.org.
